Never Let a Good Crisis go to Waste: Connecting Risk Mitigation to Strategy through Risk Response

FreeNever Let a Good Crisis go to Waste: Connecting Risk Mitigation to Strategy through Risk Response
Presenter: Dr. Sandra Warner – Executive Director Mission Continuity and Risk Management, JCCC
Like many organizations, Johnson County Community College has benefited from having a strong Risk Assessment process in place for years. In the early years, leadership would assemble and prioritize top risks facing the institution. Raising awareness seemed to be enough when the College was facing top enterprise risks like a lightning strike or utility outage. The response to these threats occurred at a time when some level of downtime was accepted as part of maintenance required to serve the campus community. Today, institutions of all size are simultaneously facing dynamic virtual and physical threats such as cyber, talent management and severe weather at a time when downtime rarely occurs outside of a disruption. In an effort to proactively adjust to the changing environment, JCCC transitioned to a risk assessment survey tool approach supported by Gartner. Their risk assessment methodology focuses on a set of risk rating criteria to calculate overall risk scores and improved reporting for both inherent and residual risk. By adopting this best practice approach, JCCC was able to develop clear objectives, establish risk owners and inform key stakeholders through the use of risk response planning.
